Tax Manager

Houston, Texas

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage the preparation and review of federal, state, and local tax filings, ensuring compliance with all applicable tax laws and regulations.
  • Lead tax planning initiatives and provide strategic advice to optimize tax positions, reduce liabilities, and enhance financial efficiency.
  • Stay current on changes in tax legislation, regulatory updates, and industry trends to ensure compliance and identify planning opportunities.
  • Oversee the tax provision process, including quarterly and annual tax provisions in accordance with GAAP and tax accounting standards (ASC 740).
  • Coordinate and support the completion of tax audits and investigations, working with external auditors and tax authorities as needed.
  • Supervise and mentor junior tax staff, providing guidance, training, and performance feedback.
  • Prepare and review internal documentation, including tax returns, transfer pricing reports, and tax strategy plans.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams (finance, legal, operations, etc.) to ensure seamless integration of tax strategies within business operations.
  • Manage and evaluate tax-related risks, providing recommendations to senior management on mitigation strategies.
  • Oversee state and local tax compliance, including sales and use tax, property tax, and business license filings.
  • Develop and implement tax-saving strategies and monitor their effectiveness.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field. CPA or JD required; Masters in Taxation preferred.
  • Minimum of 5-7 years of experience in tax management or a similar role, ideally within a corporate tax department or public accounting firm.
  • Extensive knowledge of federal, state, and international tax laws and regulations, including corporate income tax, sales tax, and indirect taxes.
  • Strong experience in preparing and reviewing tax returns, tax provisions, and other tax filings.
  • Experience with tax software and tools (e.g., OneSource, CorpTax, etc.) and proficiency in MS Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to explain complex tax matters to non-experts and senior leadership.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • A proactive approach to tax planning and compliance, with a focus on continuous improvement.

Preferred Skills:

  • Experience with mergers, acquisitions, and restructuring transactions.
  • Knowledge of transfer pricing regulations and compliance.
  • Experience working with international tax issues and compliance.
